My First Crawfish

A friend and I were at my spot on the creek I like to visit just down the street from where I live and we found a crawfish (also known as crayfish or as I grew up calling them, crawdads). I confessed that I had actually never eaten crawfish or even touched one. This may seem appalling considering I’m an Arkansas native. When I was younger I would usually just be creeped out by them. They reminded me too much of spiders I guess. Being that my friend is from Maryland my lack of crawfish experience had to change and I was ready for it. I’ve heard of these crawfish boils and had never been to one so I had to figure out what all the hype with the crawfish was about.Crawdad1

We rinsed it off pretty well and threw it in  pot with some old bay seasoning for a few mins.Crawdad5

They look like mini lobsters really.Cawdad3

After a twist, snap, and a pull you have the crawfish goodies. I ate the tail and let my friend suck out the head. I have to say it was pretty tasty.  They taste somewhat similar to a shrimp.Crawdad4

I can’t believe I’ve gone this far in life without having a crawfish. Ashamed really. I look forward to cooking with them and having a crawfish boil soon.
